For any emerging audiobook author, the most significant effort you’re making – outside of the book itself – is figuring out how to reach as many potential listeners as possible. So it’s not surprising that the most common question our team gets from authors is “how can I market my titles?”.

And of course, any resourceful author has already gone the rounds of research on this topic. We all know the basics: neat and tidy metadata, using newsletters and social media to engage your audience, submitting for retailer promotional opportunities, etc. But there are infinite ways to convince someone to try your audiobook, and we wanted to go a layer deeper.

So we asked a few of the top-selling Voices authors for their stories and perspectives around unexpected ways they grew their listenership. Here’s what they told us:

Ultimately, the marketing strategies that work are going to look different for everyone – because everyone’s reader base looks a little different. The through-line that connects all the advice we heard from authors here, though, is that it’s worth trying some out-there tactics to open the top of your funnel. There’s no converting a listener if you don’t get their attention in the first place!

We‘re always interested to hear about unexpected or unusual marketing successes in the audiobook world. If you have a story, drop us a line!

Product updates of note

  • Great news on the merchandising & promotions front: You can now create unique discounts for Google Play and Books-A-Million from within your Voices dashboard (these retailers join Apple, Barnes & Noble, and Chirp which remain available for unique pricing). This feature can be found in the marketing tab under "Promotional Pricing."

  • We’ve updated the calculations on our suggested pricing page to match current industry data. If you have substantial back catalog, it’s worth revisiting your pricing for older titles!

  • Reminder! For any issues with titles on specific retailers, please reach out to us at [email protected] rather than contacting retailers directly. As your audiobook distributor, we’re able to work with the retailer to resolve any issues!
